In the last few decades, the old working-class district of Haga has developed into one of Gothenburg’s hippest areas. The picturesque wooden houses of this district were once home to the city’s poorest residents. Today, these houses feature trendy shops where stylish Swedes browse for hip fashion items and then vie for a table at one of the many restaurants and cafés.
Haga’s transformation began in the 1980s, when smart real estate brokers discovered the potential of the so-called Governor’s houses in this district. After a renovation, the unique architecture of these houses – a single stone floor topped with 2 additional wooden floors – made for some very attractive residential and commercial spaces. Since then, this district’s selection of antiques, clothing and designer shops has been unlike anywhere else in the city.
