Colourful tiles and port wine
The history of the harbour city of Porto is inextricably connected to the Douro river. The oldest neighbourhood and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ribeira sits right on the shore of the river. Admire the houses decorated with colourful tiles, visit the birthplace of Henry the Navigator and relax on a pretty city square over a cup coffee with some Portuguese pastries. And of course there is the world famous port wine: Vila Nova de Gaia, on the other side of Douro, offers numerous wine tastings and tours, for example in the 16th-century monastery church Serra do Pilar. Porto is the ideal destination for a city trip and the perfect starting point for a longer holiday in Portugal. Expect to be surprised:

Magical bookstore
Porto partially owes its captivating charm to a unique mix of historic and modern styles. Climb the baroque Torre dos Clérigos for a magnificent view over the orange rooftops and the impressive spires of the Sé Cathedral. Around the corner is Livraria Lello: a magical bookstore that was the favourite haunt of J.K. Rowling when she lived in Porto. For something completely different, visit the Casa da Música: this fascinating concert hall was designed by Rem Koolhaas and is a must for fans of modern architecture.
