Zen in the temple
Skyscrapers and temples stand side by side in Fukuoka. Visit the Tōchō-ji temple and admire the largest wooden Buddha statue in Japan as well as the sculptures of the goddess of mercy, Kannon. Or enter the serene Shōfuku-ji Zen temple, founded by priest Eisai who brought both Zen and green tea to Japan. Another fascinating piece of history can be found in the ruins of the wall that was erected to protect the residents from Mongol invasions. The beautiful beach and refreshing mountains are also easily accessible from this port city. Fukuoka is not only perfect for a city trip but also makes a great starting point for a longer holiday in Japan. Expect to be surprised: book a flight to Fukuoka now!
Buying manga comics and slurping noodles
Tenjin offers excellent shopping. Pick up some manga and anime comics, as well as anime dolls and outfits. Or shop in Canal City, where you can also watch a film or attend a theatre performance. For a nice drink head to Nakasu where you are bound to encounter women dressed in traditional kimonos. Don’t go overboard on the sake so you can sample a late night snack of rāmen. Served with chopsticks, these traditional noodles in pork broth require a bit of effort. The dish is served at food stands on the street and tastes best after a late night out!
