Every year on New Year’s Eve, the world is treated to spectacular images of the stunning fireworks display over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The 'Coathanger' is inextricably associated with the Sydney skyline. Those without a fear of heights may climb to the top of this iconic bridge.
In 1922, a worldwide tender was put out inviting designs for a bridge to connect the city to the northern districts of Sydney. After 6 years of construction, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was inaugurated in 1932. The largest steel arch bridge in the world reaches a height of 134 metres – measured from the surface of the water. The bridge weighs a total of 52,800 tonnes. The enormous weight is supported by steel pillars, hidden under the 4 stone towers on both banks.
