Strøget is the longest car-free street in the world and the most popular shopping area in Copenhagen. But in addition to a large number of shops, Strøget also offers numerous other attractions and is the perfect place for an afternoon stroll.
In the 1960s, Copenhagen gradually became busier and more congested and the small streets were unable the handle the amount of traffic. The region was made a car-free zone and named Strøget. The zone runs from Radhusplads to Kongens Nytorv and encompasses various streets, alleyways and squares. The selection of shops ranges from expensive brand stores to small boutiques and everything in between. The great advantage of Strøget is that one can easily combine shopping with some sightseeing. The region boasts many fine examples of Danish architecture. A variety of street artists create a lively atmosphere.
