Nightlife LA-style

A simple pub or neighbourhood café may be hard to find in Los Angeles. This city is all about seeing and being seen, so going out is a stylish affair which centres mostly around the city's fancy hotel bars. After all, the places where famous people mingle is definitely the place to be.

Hotel bars have always been the favourite haunt of the rich and famous. In Los Angeles, the hotel bar concept underwent a great revival in the 1990s and the trend is here to stay. You don’t need to be a lead actor in a blockbuster movie or an accomplished film producer to join in, just as long as you dress the part. And everyone else certainly does.

Sharing great stories at Bar 1200

Here, lyrics of future hits were scribbled on paper napkins and rock stars poured each other drinks after the 1994 earthquake – Bar 1200, at the Sunset Marquis Hotel, has been the scene of many an interesting story. It may have something to do with the recording studio which is also housed in the hotel. An impressive collection of rock ‘n’ roll photos adorns the walls, and elegant sofas and dark-brown panelling create a chic interior. Although the venue may seem posh, the bar draws a diverse and easy-going crowd. Step out on the patio to enjoy the evening magic that is LA.

At great height

Although the Standard Downtown Hotel LA is indeed pretty standard, its Rooftop Bar is anything but average. This lounge bar has been built around the top floor of the building, and the circular veranda towers high above the city. This popular hotspot offers fabulous views of the downtown skyscrapers. The bar boasts a list of 100 DJs and every day a few of them stop by to spin some tunes. On some nights there are impromptu live performances by famous musicians.
