The Panama Canal is also called the 8th wonder of the world and that's quite understandable. The project was one of the largest and most incredible engineering feats in history. Ships no longer have to sail around the continent but can cut straight through the 77-km-long canal, saving an enormous amount of time and money.
The French were the first to attempt to construct a canal in 1880 but their effort was unsuccessful. During this construction, over 20,000 workers died of diseases such as yellow fever and malaria, and the project was shut down. Between 1904 and 1914, the Panama Canal was completed by the Americans who then ensured that the new waterway came under American control. Panama didn’t obtain official ownership of the canal until noon (local Panama time) on 31 December 1999.
