What could be better than breakfast on the edge of a volcano while enjoying a stunning sunrise? The majestic Gunung Batur is the place to be for this amazing experience. The 2-hour trip to the top is not too arduous and when you arrive you’ll be treated to spectacular views of Gunung Agung, Bali’s sacred mother mountain. The panorama is most beautiful at dawn so make sure you get an early start.
Batur features impressive volcanic peaks around a deep-blue crater lake. The eruption of the volcano some 30,000 years ago created this natural phenomenon. The circumference of the outer crater is 13.5 by 10 kilometres and in the centre is the still active, 1,717-metre volcano Gunung Batur. The volcano has erupted over 20 times since 1824 and smoke still rises from the crater since the last flare-up in 2000. Despite this activity it is usually safe to climb the mountain; the local guides are always up-to-speed with the latest developments.

A road winds through the black lava fields from the edge of the crater to Toya Bungkah. The village by Lake Batur is known for its hot-water springs and this is where the trips to the top of Gunung Batur start in the early morning. The hot springs are a great way to relax after a long hike, but you probably won’t be alone. For real peace and quiet, as well as attractive surroundings, rent a canoe and head to the lake. To fully enjoy the stunning views at sunrise you’ll need to get up bright and early; the local guides depart for the top at 4:00 am! After a hike and climb of approximately 2 hours, you’ll reach the edge of the volcano. Any weariness will quickly dissipate when you see the first rays of sun rise above the misty landscape and shed light on a magical panorama.
It has a sense of mysticism; the silhouettes of the surrounding crater combined with the misty lakes are just breathtaking. Breakfast at this site is a unique experience, and you can even boil your eggs in the hot crater steam.
