Colourful walls, irregular lines and a cascade of plants, the Hundertwasserhaus is a very striking structure. Designed in 1983 by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the building is one of Austria’s architectural masterpieces and one of the most photographed. Yet it caused quite the controversy when it was completed in 1985.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) believed that architecture should be more in harmony with people and nature. No unnatural straight lines but unpredictable shapes and bright colours. When the Mayor of Vienna commissioned him to design an apartment complex he incorporated this exact philosophy. Foremost an artist, Hundertwasser appealed to architect Josef Krawina for assistance. However, Krawina was too attached to straight-lined orderly patterns and this was a reason for Hundertwasser to call on architect Peter Pelikan instead.
