Lava rock elephant
The second largest city in Sicily lies at the foothills of Mount Etna. Visible from anywhere in Catania, this active volcano has also left its mark inside the city. After a devastating eruption in 1669, a large part of the city was rebuilt with black lava stone in the now iconic Sicilian baroque style. Admire this unique architectural style at the charming Piazza del Duomo with the lovely St. Agatha Cathedral. Worked up on appetite? Stroll over to the bustling Pescheria fish market: every day until 2 p.m. local fishmongers sell the catch of the day with great theatrics. Sample the swordfish, shrimp and shellfish on display at one of the nearby seafood restaurants. Catania is the ideal destination for a city trip and the perfect starting point for a longer holiday in Italy. Expect to be surprised:

Pasta alla Norma
The Via Etna leads straight from the Piazza del Duomo to the foot of the volcano. Join the locals for a stroll along this pleasant pedestrian zone; for the best views of Mount Etna wander over to Giardino Bellini park. The Bellini Museum is housed in the birth home of the famous Italian opera composer. Admire the elegant pianos and even a death mask. Did you know that the local speciality, Pasta alla Norma, is named after one of Bellini’s most famous operas? Try this local dish at one of the eateries around the Via Vittorio Emanuele II. Art lovers will be delighted by the nearby Museo Arte Contemporanea Sicilia: this 18th-century convent displays paintings, photography and media installations from contemporary Italian and foreign artists.
