A taste of history in the old city of Dubrovnik

Do you want to feel like you’re travelling back in time? Book a flight to Dubrovnik, where picturesque limestone streets, majestic city walls rising straight from the sea, centuries-old fortresses and palaces make the city feel like a place in a medieval fairy tale. Dubrovnik is considered to be one of the most photogenic cities in the region and is also known as 'the pearl of the Adriatic'. Not surprisingly, the makers of the hit TV series Game of Thrones chose Dubrovnik as the setting for the series’ fictional city of King's Landing.

Squares, watchtowers and city palaces

Included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, Dubrovnik is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world. Walk through an old city gate and onto the Stradun, a promenade that runs straight through the old town. Here you can shop for souvenirs, sit at one of the terraces, or discover the little squares, watchtowers and city palaces on foot. A lot of the buildings here date back to the 14th- and 15th centuries, when Dubrovnik was a thriving commercial republic. Some others, such as the impressive Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, are even older. If you’d like to learn more about the history of this special city, visit the Rector's Palace. This former armoury, watch house and prison now houses the Cultural Historical Museum.

The other Dubrovnik

Get a different view of the city by strolling along the city walls, which, in some places, are 25m high and 6m thick. From here, you can also see the island of Lokrum (just off the coast), which is well worth a visit thanks to its crater lake and large population of peacocks. Tours of Game of Thrones locations are offered everywhere, but if you’re in an adventurous mood, explore the city on your own. Stroll along Banje Beach, visit the old port, climb the famous Jesuit Stairs and visit Fort Lovrijenac, which was built on a rock just outside the old town. In Dubrovnik, you’ll never get tired of exploring.
