Public transport in Stavanger consists mainly of a comprehensive bus network that runs from a main terminal in the city centre. Single tickets cost between NOK 26-71; however, visitors planning a lot of travel may consider a day pass good value at around NOK 85, or the seven-day pass at about NOK 260. Taxis are available but rates are fairly high. Additional charges of up to 45 percent apply at night and on weekends. Many visitors opt to hire cars, and driving in Stavanger is relatively easy for experienced drivers who are familiar with Norway's traffic laws. Luckily, the city centre is fairly compact and many attractions are within walking distance.


Local time is GMT +1 (GMT +2 between the last Sunday in March and the the last Sunday in October).


Electrical current is 230 volts, 50Hz. Round two-pin plugs are in use.


The official currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK), divided into 100 ore. Larger establishments accept major credit cards. Use of credit cards is widespread, with Eurocard/Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Diners Club the most common. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and major post offices, as well as many hotels and travel agents, although for poorer rates. ATMs are available in all towns and cities.


The international access code for Norway is +47. Local operators provide GSM 900 mobile phone networks and cover most of the country. Internet cafes are widely available.

Stavanger Airport

A Flybussen airport bus service links the airport and Stavanger City every 20-30 minutes, tickets cost NOK 120. A Kolumbus airport bus also travels to Sandnes for NOK 33.


Car rental agencies represented at the airport include Hertz, Budget, Europcar and Avis.


Taxis are available outside the Arrivals Hall. The journey to central Stavanger takes roughly 20 minutes.


Facilities at the airport include a lost and found, tax refund desk, a bank and ATMs, luggage storage, an airport hotel, and conference facilities. Disabled assistance is available. There are also a variety of shops, restaurants and bars.


A credit card is required to access airport parking, and swiping again upon exit will charge the fee and issue a receipt. P4, located in the multi-level parking garage, charges NOK 75 per hour, NOK 300 per day, NOK 1,200 per week, and NOK 50 per day after one week. Lots P7 and P8 are farthest from the terminal, and charge daily rates of NOK 220 and NOK 100 respectively. Lot P8 is the cheapest for long-term parking, charging NOK 300 for the first week and NOK 28 per day thereafter.


Free wifi is available in two-hour increments via the "FREE Wi-Fi" network, however registration requires a mobile phone.
