The charming neighbourhood of Latinerkvarteret owes its name to the university which has been located here for centuries. And while the name may make you think of the Latin Quarter in Paris, this hidden area of central Copenhagen has a character all of its own. In addition to the university buildings, the Latinerkvarteret boasts hip record shops, quirky comic book stores and many second-hand boutiques.
Latinerkvarteret is located between the lively Frue Plads and Gråbrødretorv squares. It’s difficult today to find traces of its history as one of the poorer neighbourhoods of Copenhagen. Fashion-conscious Danes come here to track down special finds in the Danish designer boutiques and trendy fashion shops that specialise in vintage brands. After the clothing hunt, take your bounty to one of the many cosy cafés and enjoy the peace and quiet.
It’s best to begin an afternoon of shopping at Time's Up in the Krystalgade. Behind this vintage store is a team of critical fashionistas who only pick the finest items. Designer showpieces hang here on racks next to more unknown finds. Along the walls is the largest vintage shoe collection in all of Copenhagen. Gold stilettos by Prada, a classic trench coat or a cocktail dress from the 1950s – this shop can safely be called a vintage mecca.
Unique headgear can be found a few streets away at FN92 Vintage in Larsbjørnsstræde. Owner Pauli Tvilling has put together a wonderful collection of dresses and accessories including bags. The hats are especially impressive, with the oldest being an exuberant black bead headdress dating back to 1890. Another exceptional item is the lace embroidered bridal veils from 1920, complete with tiaras. The hats can be tried on, so take the opportunity to put on a fancy feather thing from the 1930s or go for the wide brim look of the 1970s.
In the same street you will find Carmen and Fantasio, one of the oldest and best vintage shops in the city. Although the shop is located in a small cellar, it offers a wide range of products. There are bargains here from the 1970s and 1980s for both men and women, including flashy sunglasses, leather jackets, bright red pumps and a profusion of floral shirts. The collection is full of funny and wonderful finds that will restore flair to any wardrobe.
