Amsterdam has just gained another top attraction: the A’DAM Tower in trendy Amsterdam-Noord finally provides the city with a decent viewing platform. The 360-degree view, the ‘Over the Edge’ swing, a cocktail bar and a fabulous restaurant make the crossing from Amsterdam’s Central Station more than worthwhile.
Initiator Sander Groet had the idea when he was on a trip around the world. “I was in Australia enjoying another great sky deck and thought: why doesn’t Amsterdam have one of these?” Groet knew of a vacant lot behind the former Shell tower and started to e-mail the City of Amsterdam about his proposal. The plan seemed like a done deal, but the 2008 crisis put the brakes on any new construction projects. In 2012, the City of Amsterdam organised a pitch for the vacant Shell tower. Groet contacted his former business partner at ID&T Duncan Stutterheim and Hans Brouwer at MassiveMusic and presented a plan that the city couldn’t refuse. The final result is the multi-functional A’DAM Tower.
