The metropolis of the Caucasus, Baku is a city of significant wealth. And that is reflected in the city skyline. In the last few decades, gloomy Soviet patina has made way for the glitz and glamour worthy of a rich oil state. In addition to the towers of medieval fortresses, the outlines of futuristic skyscrapers define the skyline.
It is a matter of personal taste how the modern architecture compares to the buildings of the former shahs. Fortunately the beauty of the historic city centre, Ichari-Shahar, has withstood the ravages of time. Many of the buildings on display have been designated a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. But the 100-year-old boulevard of Baku is also a worthwhile attraction, albeit a lot less subtle than the other monuments.
