Abolishment of Air Passenger Duty for children under 16

The UK government have abolished Air Passenger Duty (APD) for children aged 12 to 15 travelling in the Economy Class cabin on or after 1 March 2016.

We are working towards updating our website in order to reflect this change, but currently 12 -15 years old are still being charged APD when booking on klm.com. Customers travelling with 12 to 15 year olds in the Economy cabin on or after 1 March can contact our Service Centre to make their APD exempt bookings.

If you book on our website and the booking includes :
  • A child (children) aged 12-15 at the time of travel, departing from a UK airport
  • This child is (these children are) due to travel in Economy Class cabin on or after 1 March 2016.
Then this child is (these children are) entitled to a refund of the APD.

In order to get a refund, there are 2 steps to follow:
  • enter the child’s (children’s) Advance passenger information (API) which includes date of birth on our website. The API can be updated in the My Trip section of klm.com.
  • then complete the online form
Please select “refund” in the drop down menu and indicate that your request relates to an APD refund in the message box. We will proceed with the refund(s) using the original method of payment without any administration fee.

All passengers who paid via a credit or debit card will have the APD refunded automatically to their original card. Anyone who paid via Bank Transfer can add his/her IBAN code or bank details directly in the refund form. We aim to complete all the refunds within 4 weeks of notification.

Children under 12 travelling in Economy and infants do not currently pay APD.
Passengers who have booked via a travel agent would need to contact their travel agent directly to obtain a full APD refund.
