Important

  • Large bags that do meet the hand luggage requirements may still need to be checked in at the gate, free of charge, due to limited space in overhead bins in the cabin. Please stow small bags underneath the seat in front of you.
  • We strongly recommend viewing your baggage allowance in My Trip for KLM flights. Please check the websites of other airlines in your itinerary for their (hand) baggage policy.

Good to know

  • Baggage of which the packing or shape may cause damages or block the baggage handling system, e.g. baggage packaged with clingfilm for food or ball-shaped baggage, will be refused at check-in. We therefore strongly discourage wrapping your baggage with clingfilm. Professional sealing is allowed, as long as it doesn’t result in unmanageable baggage.
  • If you bought an upgrade to Business Class during check-in or at a kiosk, the baggage allowance of your new Business Class ticket applies.
  • Dimensions of your baggage include any handles and wheels.

Special and extra baggage

Do you want to take more baggage items than your standard allowance? Simply reserve for an extra suitcase (up to 23 kg) online. Plus, you get a discount when purchasing your extra baggage online at least 24 hours before departure. Read more about arranging extra baggage.

Are you planning on bringing baggage items larger than 158 cm (L + W + H) or heavier than 23 kg in Economy Class or 32 kg in Business Class? Read more about transporting baggage as cargo.

Next to that, you can take all kinds of special baggage with you. Read more about special baggage.

Children’s baggage

For a child younger than 2 years of age who will be travelling on your lap, at no additional costs, you may bring:

  • 1 collapsible buggy (read the extra information below)
  • 1 child car seat

Baggage and transferring

If the ticket you bought for your trip includes a transfer on a connecting flight in less than 24 hours, your check-in baggage will usually be sent to your final destination. The baggage claim tag that you receive when dropping off your baggage always states your bag’s final destination.

When transferring, you do need to collect your baggage and check it in again for your connecting flight, if:
  • You have purchased 2 or more tickets from different airlines that have dissimilar conditions
  • You transfer is from an intercontinental flight to a domestic flight (for example in the United States)
  • You arrive at one airport, and your connecting flight departs from another airport
  • Part of your journey is by bus or rail

When transferring at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol or Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, depending on your ticket conditions, it may be possible to collect your baggage, however possibly against a fee.
