The KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme enables businesses with a corporate contract to ensure that some of their corporate travel is undertaken using sustainable biofuel.

Using sustainable biofuel in large quantities can result in an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions in the airline industry. For this reason, there is a worldwide need for technological development and further research into sustainable raw materials. Right now, the production, and the market, for sustainable biofuel is extremely limited. KLM has been working to develop the market for biofuel since 2011 and is stimulating more companies in the airline industry to follow its example.

KLM is making every effort to stimulate the market, but cannot do so in isolation. Support from companies and other airlines is a necessary ingredient. Sustainable fuel still costs three times the price of traditional fossil-based kerosene.

Partners in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme pay a surcharge that covers the difference in cost between biofuel and traditional kerosene. In so doing, they confirm their leadership and actively contribute to making air transport more sustainable. The support of the participating companies helps to make BioFuel available on a larger scale and to make it economically more competitive to traditional fossil-based kerosene.

KLM only buys biofuels that have been produced from raw materials that do not have a negative impact on biodiversity and/or food production. This sustainable fuel is sourced through SkyNRG and is assessed by the SkyNRG Sustainability Board. SkyNRG is certified by the Roundtable of Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).

KLM has been investing in the use of sustainable biofuel for years now and aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% per passenger by 2020 (compared to 2011 levels) through fleet renewal, using sustainable biofuel and increasing flight efficiency. Because affordable sustainable biofuel is not always available, KLM also aims to stimulate the market for sustainable biofuel. KLM is “best in class” when it comes to fuel efficiency and leads the field with respect to using sustainable biofuel.
