Unaccompanied Minor service

Stewardess and child

With our Unaccompanied Minor service, you can rest assured that your child will travel safely. Booking the service is mandatory for children aged 5 up to and including 14 who are travelling alone, or travelling in a different travel class than you as a parent or accompanying adult.

Before departure and after arrival, our KLM staff, or staff hired by KLM, will accompany your child to and from the aircraft, even in the event of delay. During the flight, our cabin attendants will keep a close eye on your child. We will keep you informed by telephone, e-mail and text message about any changes in your child’s flight schedule. At the end of the journey, we will personally accompany your child to the person you have authorised to collect him or her.

Read more about receiving flight information by telephone, e-mail and text message.

For children aged 15 up to and including 17 years old, the service is optional. If you choose not to book the Unaccompanied Minor service, we will consider your child an adult passenger. In case of flight delay or cancellation, we’re always happy to help, if your child mentions his or her age and need for assistance to our KLM staff. However, for supervision in case of flight disruptions, make sure to book the Unaccompanied Minor service.

How the Unaccompanied Minor service works

Book

Make sure to book the flight for a child travelling alone together with the Unaccompanied Minor service at least 24 hours before departure. This service cannot be booked separately of the flight, and you can only book this via the KLM Customer Contact Centre or your travel agent.

When booking the service, we will ask for details about your child and for your contact information. Next to that, we will ask for details of the person bringing your child to the airport at departure, and the person authorised to pick up your child on arrival. Make sure to have all information prepared when booking the service. We will use this information to fill out the Handling Advice form, which your child will carry throughout his or her trip.

Check-in and at the airport

To accompany your child during its journey, you need to authorise us by handing in 4 filled out and signed copies of the Handling Advice form at the check-in desk at the airport. Fill out the form online, or print the form and fill it out by hand. Make sure to sign all the copies and bring an up to date version of the form with you to the airport.

During online check-in, you will receive a check-in confirmation, but no boarding pass. The boarding pass you will receive at the check-in desk at the airport.

A parent or guardian aged 18 years or older needs to bring the child to the check-in desk at least 2,5 hours before departure. The person bringing the child to the airport needs to bring a valid type of identification and stay at the airport until the child’s flight has departed.

Departure from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, check-in for Unaccompanied Minors is either at desk 8 in Departure Hall 1 (for European flights) or desk 16 in Departure Hall 2 (for intercontinental flights). After receiving your boarding pass and checking in your baggage, you will need to accompany the child to the dedicated Unaccompanied Minor service desk, located between Departure hall 1 and Departure hall 1a. Make sure to be there at least 75 minutes before departure.

Transfer

During a long transfer at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, we will bring your child to our Junior Jet Lounge. Here, he or she can sip a soft drink and have a good time drawing, playing with toys and computer games, and watching the latest movies. There's also room to relax on one of the beanbags and read a nice book (in various languages).

KLM only allows transfers for unaccompanied minors on KLM, Air France, and Delta Air Lines flights. For questions, please contact the KLM Customer Contact Centre.

Arrival

Upon arrival, we will bring your child to the person authorised to pick him or her up, according to the Handling Advice form. This person needs to bring a valid type of identification. We will not leave your child with anyone representing a company or organisation.
